Mutant Gene Linked To Aggressive Cancer Of The Prostate

US researchers have found that men with prostrate cancer have an increased risk of aggressive tumor if they are carriers of a gene mutation which is normally linked to breast cancer in women.

This finding could have major implications in treatment options for prostrate cancer

If a patient carries the mutated gene, he may want to opt against watchful waiting of prostrate cancer, where it is just monitored and not treated.

It is difficult to distinguish between aggressive tumors and the ones that may stay without spreading or enlarging. The researchers examined 979 men with prostrate cancer and 1251 men without the cancer. They looked at whether the men carried the mutations of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes. These are the genes that cause an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer in women.

Only Ashkenazi Jews were included in the study because they are five times more likely to carry the mutation in the genes than the general population. The study found that the mutations did not increase the risk of a man getting prostrate cancer, but those who already had the cancer stood a higher risk of having a more aggressive tumor.

Statistically, more than 192000 men are likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009. More than 27000 men also die from it. Every 2.7 minutes one new case occurs and a patient dies from the disease every 19 minutes.

1 in 10,000 under the age of 40 will be diagnosed with prostrate cancer. From the ages of 40 to 59, this rate shoots up to 1 in 39. From 60 to 69 years of age, it is 1 in 14. More than 65% of prostate cancer diagnoses are made in men above the age of 65.

African American men have 56% more likelihood to develop prostate cancer than Caucasian men. They are also 2.5 times as likely to die from the disease.

If the father, brother or son has a history of prostrate cancer, the man is twice as likely to develop the disease. If two or more relatives have prostrate cancer history, the likelihood increases to four times.

Now the study conducted on gene mutation and prostrate cancer, estimates that participants with aggressive tumors had 3.2 times more likelihood of carrying the BRCA2 gene mutation than the men in control group.

Cancer prevention methods are many and green tea stands out as a viable natural alternative

The mysteries of cancer have eluded us for years. However, we are beginning to learn many pieces of valuable information about  how to prevent many different kinds of cancer .

And, of course, once we learn more about how to prevent the disease, we can better understand how to treat it, as well. Research is ongoing, and scientists are learning much about this disease, though there still is much to learn.

One form of cancer that plagues many men is prostate cancer. Prostrate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men, other than skin cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be about 234,460 new cases of prostate cancer in the United States in 2006. About 27,350 men will die of this disease.

Prostate cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in men, after lung cancer and colorectal cancer. While 1 man in 6 will get prostate cancer during his lifetime, only 1 man in 34 will die of this disease. Earlier detection and better treatments are making the death rate for this disease go down.

Yet, there is still much work to do to learn the causes of prostate cancer and to develop more reliable treatments. If we can further our research and learn the causes of more types of cancer, including prostate cancer, then we will be well on our way to preventing more incidences of this disease.

There have been some promising findings, and it appears that one thing that we can do to  prevent prostate cancer  is to include green tea in our diet. We’ve learned through research that green tea has the ability to prevent many forms of cancer, prostate cancer among them. Studies of Asian culture, where green tea consumption is high and cancer incidences are much lower have led to the understanding of how green tea can help in this area.

One study of particular interest was reported by the UK Tea Council. This study showed that green tea consumption appears to have the ability to act as a sort of scavenger against a substance called Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS).* ROS are a form of free radicals that cause cell damage.

This particular form of free radical appears to be one that especially contributes to the development of prostate cancer, when it is produced in excess. But, the anti-oxidants contained in green tea have the particular abilities to get at these free radicals and eradicate them, preventing them from developing into cancer cells.

So, it appears that prostate cancer is just one of the many that green tea may have the power to prevent. And, the power appears to be in the anti-oxidants that are found in green tea. Anti- oxidants are important because they combat free radicals, like ROS, in our bodies. These free radicals are created as a by product of converting the food we eat to energy.

When free radicals are not kept in check, they damage our cells and DNA. This leads to faster aging and a higher risk of many diseases, including cancer.

For this reason, a diet high in anti-oxidants is now believed to be one of the best ways to prevent disease and premature aging. And, green tea, along with certain fruits and vegetables provide some of the most potent sources of these important substances. If you’re not already doing so, add pomegranates, blueberries, artichokes, tomatoes and asparagus to your diet. These fruits and vegetables have been found to have the most potent anti-oxidants. And, wash it all down with green tea.

One great reason that green tea is such a good way to prevent disease and protect health is that it has no side effects, so everyone can use it. Even those who are sensitive to caffeine can usually tolerate green tea quite well. Green tea is far lower in caffeine than coffee or black tea. In addition, the caffeine in green tea doesn’t appear to cause a fast heart rate and jitters the way that many other caffeine containing beverages do.

The news about prostate cancer and green tea is important to deliver, particularly to American men. On average, the American man is far more likely to drink coffee than tea. And, when American men do drink tea, they are much more likely to drink black tea. So, we should spread the word to all the men in our lives that green tea is a powerful health protector.

There are a few  options for treatment once prostate cancer is diagnosed. One option for localized prostate cancer is surgery and here we look at just what such surgery involves.

The normal approach for surgery in the case of localized prostate cancer is to remove the entire prostate gland and surrounding tissue in an operation known as a radical prostatectomy. The operation is usually performed as a retropubic prostatectomy, in which access is achieved through the lower abdomen, or a perineal prostatectomy, in which access is gained through the perineum which lies between the scrotum and the anus.

During a radical prostatectomy the prostate gland is removed, together with the seminal vesicles, the ampullae (the lower sections of the tubes which carry sperm from the testicles to the prostate gland) and some other adjoining tissue.

In addition, that part of the urethra which passes through the prostate gland, as well as the neck of the bladder and a part of the sphincter muscle that controls urine flow is also removed.

From this you will see that a radical prostatectomy is not minor surgery, but is a demanding procedure which generally lasts anywhere from about 2 to 4 hours. It is also an operation which generally requires a stay in hospital of about 3 days followed by 10 days to 2 weeks at home during which time you will need to use a catheter to drain urine.

In the past a radical prostatectomy almost always resulted in impotence, but today improvements in surgical techniques and the introduction of what is known as ‘nerve sparing’ surgery means that an increasing number of men are now spared from impotence. When nerve sparing surgery is performed the two sets nerves and other vessels that run along the side of the prostate gland are carefully preserved in order to retain the erectile function. This technique is unfortunately not suitable in all cases of prostate cancer.

One of the commonest results of prostate surgery is a degree of incontinence. Almost all patients will experience some loss of control following their operation and this can vary from occasionally dribbling to a complete loss of urinary control. Fortunately, some men are suitable for further surgery to ease this problem and it is sometimes possible to surgically implant an artificial urinary sphincter or to use collagen injections to narrow the opening of the bladder.

Some men will also suffer muscle damage during surgery leading to fecal incontinence, which is essentially a problem caused by a reduction in the elasticity of the rectum. This too can be corrected surgically in some cases. Radiation therapy can also sometimes be used to stiffen the rectal muscles.

Of course surgery is just one of the  treatments available for localized prostate cancer today and, while many men favor it because it involves the immediate and complete removal of cancer cells from the body, you should not automatically assume that this is the best treatment for you. Take some time to look at all of your options and discuss each with your physician before coming to any decision.
