How Radiation Treatment Works

Prostate Cancer Radiation Treatment

This kind of  cancer is deadly to men over fifty, and is often so slow to really develop that it’s not noticed until it’s too late to remove by normal surgery.

Although it can be prevented by normal routine checkups and a healthy low-stress lifestyle, it’s still possible for any male to develop prostate cancer. Because of this, radiation treatment is one of the most common methods of treating it, and it’s effective for the most part. However, it isn’t perfect. Before getting such treatment, it’s best to know how the treatment works.

The Alternative to Prostate Cancer Surgery

Radiation treatment is also called radiotherapy or chemotherapy, and is used when surgery fails or during any stage of the cancer. This works by sending a wave of ionized radioactive particles. This radiation is absorbed into cells, which mutates the DNA and increases the likelihood of that cell dying. There are two main types of  cancer radiation treatment – beam therapy and brachytherapy. Radiation is the most commonly used method aside from surgery.

Beam therapy is done by placing the patient into a linear accelerator to send beams of radioactive particles firing directly at the prostate. The latest techniques enable the beam to match its  shape so that other tissue isn’t damaged. Usually, beam therapy is done over a period of several weeks daily. There are fewer side effects with newer forms of  radiation therapy, however.

Brachytherapy is done by infusing a series of small rods with radiation and inserting them into the cancerous tissue. These rods act as a permanent emitter of low-grade radiation. The X-rays are only able to travel a short distance, so there’s little chance of damage to the other surrounding tissues of the body. This treatment tends to have a better outcome as far as preventing recurring cancer. Also, there’s little chance of the radiation being exposed to other men.

Radiation treatment is most commonly used in men who wouldn’t really be able to have surgery safely. This radiation treatment is one of the most effective methods of treatment for prostate cancer, but there are some side effects, such as hair loss, sickness and overall loss of energy.

Although cancer of the prostate is a very deadly disease, it can be easily dealt with if it’s caught on time with regularly scheduled checkups and a healthy lifestyle.

Shopping for Advanced Prostate Cancer Treatment

What is Prostate Cancer? Firstly, the prostate is a gland that forms part of the male reproductive system, which is situated just bellow the bladder and surrounds the urethra which carries urine from the body and produces the fluid that forms part of the semen. The reason behind prostate cancer is not known but what’s known is that there’s a growth of cancer cells in prostate, which is mostly excited by male hormones like testosterone.

Prostate cancer is generally a slow growing cancer. Advanced prostate cancer is cancer which has spread outside the prostate gland to the lymph nodes, bones, or other organs of the body. Apropos treatments, more especially advanced prostate cancer treatment what is available and what are the effects hereof? Patients may receive radiotherapy or hormone treatment.

The latest treatments on prostate cancer include a vaccine that contains human prostate-specific antigen ( PSA ) that might help men with advanced prostate cancer. PSA is a protein produced by epithelial cells in the prostate often present in healthy males at low levels. But in men with prostate cancer, PSA levels are increased. Analysts have also developed a novel solution apropos advanced prostate cancer treatment that might be better and have less complications.

Analysts have now discovered that by utilizing existing treatment for prostate cancer with new drugs at a lower dose they can improve results than the advanced prostate cancer treatments already being used. Hormones, known as androgens, usually cause expansion in prostate cancer. However hormone deprivation, which at first has a good effect on the cancer may in turn result in the cancer beginning to grow again and also do have complications ensuing occasionally in these existing advanced prostate cancer treatments being inadequate. This advanced prostate cancer treatment can block cancer survival paths, but do not kill prostate cancer cells alone.

Treatments are saving lives everyday however treatments do have complications. Men undergoing advanced prostate cancer treatment can experience side effects ,eg reduced libido, impotency, hot flushes, lassitude and sweating, steady decline in body hair. Also reduced bone and muscle strength and cognitive changes are noticed.

With all medicine and treatment there are always complications, it is how we cope with these complications actually that matters. When you look at it, these complications of the treatment should be seen as an advantage against non treatment as non treatment finally leads to the cancer growing, the agony augmenting and possible death.

Treatment options for prostate cancer – Family History of Prostate Cancer Has No Impact On The Treatment Outcomes

Individual Health Insurance and Prescription Assistance Programs For People in The United States

Individual health coverage offers benefits for medical care. Prescription assistance programs can be included in some programs. Some policies may possibly provide for payment of health expenses incurred on a reimbursement basis by paying benefits to the plan owner, payment on a service basis by paying those who supply the services directly, or payment of an indemnity by paying a prearranged amount regardless of the sum charged for health visits.

Health expense or hospitalization insurance could be written on an individual or group basis. Many of these plans will provide prescription help.

Though there are lots of types of benefits to be had, individual medical expense insurance might generally be categorized as basic health expense coverage, major medical coverage, comprehensive medical insurance, and special plans.

These policies ought to cover prescriptions because prescription drugs help so many patients. Most of these plans have for the most part been replaced by managed care options and are no longer sold as stand-alone policies. These types of programs have been modified and replaced in answer to changes in the health care field relative to cost control and market competition.

Basic coverage provided by an individual health expense plan includes hospital expense, surgical expense and medical expense. These three basics can be sold as one or individually. Often this is issued as "first dollar" coverage, which means it does not contain a deductible.

As the name indicates, hospital expense healthcare insurance offers benefits for visits incurred during hospitalization. Hospital indemnities are frequently classified into 2 general categories:

  • Room and board, including nursing care and special diets
  • Miscellaneous medical expenses, including x-rays, laboratory fees, prescription medication, medical supplies, and operating and treatment rooms

In some cases, surgical benefits may well be integrated for selected types of surgery and related expenses. Hospital expense healthcare insurance provides benefits for daily hospital room and board and various hospital bills whilst the insured individual is confined to the hospital.

The plan possibly will provide for a particular dollar amount for the daily hospital room and board benefit, although the trend is toward medical insurance of not more than the semiprivate room charge unless a private room is medically required. The room and board benefit may possibly be paid on either an indemnity basis or a reimbursement basis, depending on the particular plan.

Indemnity policies are occasionally called dollar amount policies. Room and board rates differ by geographic location, however it is not uncommon to notice room and board rates ranging from $400 to $900 per day or more.

Normally, the maximum number of days is from 3 to 400 . More commonly, room and board expenses are paid on a reimbursement basis. also called an expenses incurred basis Under this policy, the insurance will pay in one of two ways.

The actual bills for a semiprivate room are covered.

A percentage of the actual cost is paid, with no definite dollar limit.

Under the first reimbursement option, the medical insurance carrier will pay the full actual semiprivate room rate, regardless of what it is. Under the second reimbursement option, the health insurance company pays a specified percentage, regardless of what the actual charges are. A common percentage is 80%.

To recap, under the actual charges style of reimbursement policy, the health insurance will pay the actual amount billed for a semiprivate room with no regard to a specific dollar limit. Under the percentage style of reimbursement insurance, the policy might pay a specified percentage of the actual charges.

Prescription Drug Help For Those Without Prescription Insurance in America

Anyone is entitled to receive prescription medicine at a cut-rate price regardless of their pay, age or pre-existing conditions

There is a modern medication discount card free to a person that desires it, and it is free of charge! For too long, Americans lacking health insurance have been paying full retail prices for their medication but with this innovative program they will instantly have somebody on their side. Prescription Assistance Programs have been around for many years.

Rx Help began the plan to bring down the price of medicines to those people lacking medical insurance. This has developed into a nationwide plan with cardholders in the entire 50 states. These prescription drug discount cards are accepted at over 50,000 local and national pharmacies.

Numerous non-profit organizations and clinics issue the cards as a technique to fill a need and help their community in difficult times. The discount cards have been mailed to local United Way agencies, clinics, physician offices and pharmacies in addition to neighboring community health centers. These cards are not medical insurance, however they can lower the cost of your prescriptions by up to 25 percent or more. The individual just presents their card to the pharmacy and they are sure that they will pay either the negotiated price or the pharmacy’s retail price, whichever is lesser.

There are persons that are saving $20 -$55 on prescription drugs and that is money they can make use of to buy groceries, pay rent or pay the phone bill. They are furthermore able to find the prescription medication they desperately need. The cards are available at no charge to anyone and there is no limit on how often they can be used.

An additional approach that Rx Help is able to aid uninsured persons is through Prescription Assistance Programs. These programs are operated by each drug company and each one is a little unique. If a person qualifies however, they will obtain their prescription medicine at no cost. To qualify you need to be without insurance and your household earnings can not exceed certain guidelines.

There is a huge need for drug aid right now, more than ever seeing as a lot of patients continue to lose their jobs. A lot of patients could do with assistance at this instant more than ever.

Healing With Nature – Have We Gone Astray Now?

Pharmacuetical drugs for prostate cancer are often extracted from natural sources and made synthetic. Why not go back to the original source?

 > More on Natural Cancer Treatment  Click Here

Big corporations have become very powerful. They have developed influence in the political arena as part of their power structures.

Therefore, you have an industry that manufactures drugs. Maybe, as rumour has it, they have wrapped their arms around a certain government regulatory agency. Who knows? With this power, they can spend money on research and get ‘approved’ by this regulatory agency. Then they can market their prescription medications for outrageous prices.

Yet, the natural remedies that currently exist, such as acid reflux natural remedies, and natural treatments for prostate cancer, have no such champion with big purse strings. In fact, many of the big prescription drug medications are nothing more than concentrated, synthetic and slightly different copies of compounds that naturally exist in nature.

So, therefore, regular remedies, like heartburn remedy, and natural prostate cancer remedies, that grow in the forest, desert or perhaps even in one’s backyard can’t get the stamp of approval from this unnamed government agency, as a substance that is proven to have a positive effect on health.

>>Alternative natural non toxic remedy for prostate cancer. Learn more

It’s rather funny when you think about it. But then, nature was there before any government and nature will be there after. Interesting isn’t it? Nature doesn’t seem to require government approval.

But we spoke of a balance a few moments ago. The power definitely seems to rest on one side of the equation. But what is happening on the other side? Alternative healers, old books, and folk wisdom passed down through the ages are still out there and from them, many people learn to apply natural healing methods (that don’t have that big stamp of approval from an authoritarian agency) to solve their health problems. Because the costs of getting ‘official’ treatment and officially approved prescription meds now make the cost of getting said treatment beyond the reach of many.

In other cases, some people just know about simple things that work and they seem to work better, cost less and cause less trauma to the human body when implemented than the results derived from going through ‘official’ channels. If you are a person who doesn’t have unlimited wealth, what way are you likely to go?

Next, learn more about: herbal remedies herpes and others as well!

Embrace and preserve the natural healing choices that have alway been with us.

Implanting Seeds New Treatment – Prostate Cancer Questions and Answers

You CAN beat cancer, especially if diagnosed in the early stages

If anyone has told you that it’s over for you because you have been diagnosed with cancer of the prostate, this article will show you how and why you can still win.

 >>  Beat Cancer. Prostate Cancer Survivor Shows how. Click here

Lots of others have won and survived this condition, you can as well.

Question: My father has just been diagnosed with the very first stages of prostate cancer, and the Dr told him it is up to him what treatment he wants to have. He advised monitoring him every 3 months, which my father wasn’t really happy about. He is 56, very healthy strong man, and would like to know more about the new treatment that involves implanting seeds.

Answer: First things first, I am very happy that your father’s case was detected pretty early. If it’s indeed the first stages of the condition, then there’s a VERY HIGH likelihood of surviving prostate cancer. So, that’s a good thing.

If your father isn’t knowledgeable about the condition, then it’s not a good thing for the doctor to say it’s up to him what treatment he wants. He’s relying on the doctor for advice and help, so the doctor should provide good advice and help.

  >>  Beat Cancer. Survivor tells how. Click here

I also don’t recommend "only" monitoring, which is also called "watchful waiting". It’s better to commence the "right" treatment right away, as this will improve his chances of surviving the cancer, especially as it hasn’t spread dangerously to other parts of his body. And of course, the right treatment will depend on lots of factors – which your father and the doctor(s) will work out.

About new prostate cancer treatment involving implanting seeds, it’s called BRACHYTHERAPY – the placing (or implanting) of radioactive seeds in the victim’s prostate gland. Also called "internal radiation therapy", "seed implant therapy", or "interstitial radiation therapy" brachytherapy seems more effective for lots of people because it basically spares the healthy and nearby tissues, than other forms of treatment.

I would suggest your father discusses this treatment option and others with the doctor(s) to know which will be best for him, under the circumstances, before going ahead with any

Prostate Cancer Vaccine, New Cancer Cure?

treatment options for prostate cancerSince in US, more than 200,000 new cases of prostate cancer are discovered every year a more effective treatment was desperately needed.

At the prostate cancer symposium in Orlando, co-sponsored by the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Eric J. Small, MD, UCSF professor of medicine and urology

presented the findings of the study he led helped by other 19 US institutions, regarding an effective treatment for prostate cancer.

Scientists said that the rate of survival increased by four and a half months in those who were administered the cancer vaccine compared with those who got the placebo.

For the patients this is great news because it gives them hope that an even better vaccine could be discovered.

This vaccine is not like the others that are designed to prevent a disease. This is made to treat advanced prostate cancer by increasing the immune system’s response to cancer cells.

The vaccine was well tolerated by patients and the side effects were mild: fever and chills. This is good news because chemotherapy and radiation gives a lot of unbearable side effects and cancer patients are often on the look out for other possible  alternative less drastic cancer treatments .

Small included in the study 127 patients suffering of asymptomatic metastatic hormone refractory prostate cancer (HRPC). 82 of them received the vaccine and 45 got placebo. They were administered three shots over six weeks. The treatment continued three years.

For those treated with the vaccine, the median rate of survival was 25.9 months. For those who got a placebo treatment, the overall of survival was 21.4 months.
The conclusions were that 115 patients of this group had progressive disease at the time of data analysis and all patients were followed for survival for 3 years.

Scientists do not know if the vaccine will work on patients suffering of early-stage prostate cancer and of explosive terminal cancer. The vaccine, called Provenge, does not cure cancer but at least it slows it down.  A prostate cancer diet can also be an additional help and support alongside conventional treatments.

Other cancer vaccines are being developed for treating: leukemia, breast cancer, colon cancer, and kidney and pancreas cancer as well.

The human body is not able to recognize the cancer cells and that is why it can not fight them without help. The vaccine is designed to alert the body is cancerous cells are present. Provenge has been made out of a genetically engineered protein and a dendritic cell provided from the patient’s bloodstream. After getting the vaccine shots, the immune system will react and will activate immune T-cells to find and destroy the cancer cells.

This discovery is important not only for those who suffer of the disease but also for the field. This vaccine confirms what everybody denied, that vaccines can really work.

Is Robotic Prostatectomy For You?

A major study of patient satisfaction and regret following open prostatectomy and robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy provides some important lessons for surgeons …

… and opens up the debate about  alternative prostate cancer care

robotic prostatectomy registryThe research, recently published in the European Journal of Urology, shows 19 per cent of patients regretted their treatment choice and patients who had robot-assisted surgery were most likely to be dissatisfied.

The authors suggest the regret is “possibly because of higher expectation of an ‘innovative procedure’”.

Their conclusion is one for all urological surgeons to note.

“We suggest that urologists carefully portray the risks and benefits of new technologies during preoperative counselling to minimise regret and maximise satisfaction.”

In recent years, the treatment of prostate cancer has been a rapidly developing field, providing patients with a  wide range of different cancer care choices .

Brachytherapy and HIFU offer non-surgical options and for those who want surgery, there are open, laparoscopic and nerve-sparring options, depending upon your diagnosis and treatment provider.

At the same time, patients are becoming increasingly proactive, using the internet to research and consider the different  prostate cancer treatment options themselves, as well as the traditional consultation with the urologist.

Increased choice is without doubt a positive benefit for patients, but as urology centres – both private and NHS – seek to attract patients, we have a responsibility to carefully counsel them about the advantages and disadvantages of treatments.
There is a distinctive risk when a procedure is perceived to be new and especially “innovative”. The media will always be interested in the next “pioneering operation”, particularly one which involves robots.

A newspaper article will tend to portray the new procedure as an immaculate solution, which corrects all the risk and disadvantages of other procedures.
As surgeons, we have a responsibility to provide patients with a more sober and informative picture, acknowledging limitations as well as benefits.

The patient satisfaction study was based on the responses of 400 men who had undergone retropubic radical prostatectomy (RRP) or robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy between 2000 and 2007 in the US.

davinci robotic prostatectomy surgery The report’s authors also examined patients urinary domain scores, hormonal domain scores and found scores were independently linked with regret.

It is still early days for robotic surgery in the UK. In prostate cancer surgery, there are currently six Da Vinci robotic machines in the UK, compared with 350 in America.

There is no current evidence that robotic surgery provides better outcomes for patients, in terms of urinary symptoms, post operative sexual function or post-operative risks and complications. It seems certain that robotic surgery will increase within the UK during the next decade, with NHS and private centres purchasing the Da Vinci machines.

This will provide even more choice for patients, which is in principle, a positive development.

It is however vital that patients are given accurate and comprehensive information to enable them to make an informed choice, rather than simply being over-sold on a new product.

Testicular Cancer Chemotherapy, Taking a Chemo Holiday

cancer cure prostrate treatmentFor many people suffering from advanced prostate cancer chemotherapy can be worse than the condition itself. Now however studies have shown that it might be possible to enjoy a brief chemotherapy holiday.

Once prostate cancer has moved out of the prostate and spread into other parts of the body it is classed as advanced prostate cancer and treatment is much more difficult than when the disease is confined to the prostate gland.

Where your cancer has not spread too far and is not particularly aggressive it is possible not merely to treat the condition but in fact to cure it.

However, in many cases where the disease is widespread, or is especially aggressive, treatment is a matter of simply holding back the progress of the disease and providing you with the best possible quality of life. Nowadays one of the chief  amongst various treatments for advanced prostate cancer is chemotherapy frequently using a drug called docetaxal. Docetaxal is a particularly effective drug for a lot of patients and it does indeed slow the progress of prostate cancer and extend life for a significant number of patients. But, it is not without its side effects that include things like nausea, loss of appetite, hair loss and an increased risk of infection. As a result it is here that we come across one of the biggest difficulties in advanced prostate cancer treatment.

When you are treating a condition that cannot be cured and that will kill you sooner or later, then extending your life by holding back the progress of the cancer is fine provided that treatment gives you a reasonable quality of life and does not end up being worse than the cancer itself. For a lot of prostate cancer patients, who are often in their 60s, 70s or even 80s, chemotherapy is not exactly pleasant but it is a price that is worth paying when they first start their course of treatment. However, as the treatment progresses and the side effects start to come into play the picture frequently alters and a lot of patients begin to ask whether it is worth it. Naturally this is never an easy question to answer and must be the subject of a discussion between yourself, your family and your physician.

A lot of us are familiar with this picture either through our own experience with illness or as a result of our experience of seeing family members of close friends in this situation and will know well just how hard a time it can be. Now, however, there may be a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel as studies involving a sizeable group of patients with metastatic, androgen-independent prostate cancer show that a lot of patients may be able to take a ‘chemo holiday’ without any significant damage to their treatment.treatment options for prostate cancer

Put another way, after a number of weeks of chemo, and when the side effects are really staring to pull you down, you may be able to simply stop your chemotherapy for a while and let your body recover a little before carrying on with your treatment. And this would be a good point to  boost your immune system with good dietary supplements.

It is of course early days yet and no-one is exactly certain yet precisely how long a ‘chemo holidays’ could be or how frequently you can take them, but for many advanced prostate cancer patients this apparently minor advance in treatment may well make all the difference in the world.

Prostate Cancer Treatment Info, Saw Palmetto

Enlarged prostate can be treated successfully by the herb saw palmetto.

Saw Palmetto As An Alternative Treatment For Prostate Cancer

When enlarged prostate symptoms develop talk to your Doctor about maintaining your prostate health with the addition of the saw palmetto herb.

Europe has been using Saw Palmetto to promote prostate health for years. Enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and the herb saw palmetto has been studied in European labs for it’s effectiveness in treating the disorder. American labs lag far behind in their research of enlarged prostate and herbs to treat it.

Modern medicine in America frequently relies on pharmaceuticals sometimes to the detriment of  natural herbal remedies . For instance, Doctors usually proscribe Proscar (T) and other prostate drugs which take time to become effective, unlike the Saw Palmetto herb which will kick in within 30 days.

The medicinal part of ‘Serenoa Repens’ or the Saw Palmetto is derived from the partially dried ripe fruit of the plant. The Saw Palmetto herb is indigenous to Southeastern United States but is most prevalent in Florida. It is the sterols and the fatty acids that are found in the berry that are the active ingredients. In Germany ninety percent of treatments for BPH use the saw palmetto herb, while in Italy it is fifty percent. Their successes have been many since BPH is nearly universal in the aging process of men.

A Study done in Russia tested 150 men with an enlarged prostate who had been diagnosed with BPH and other prostatic problems. Their findings concluded that Permixon, a European brand of standardized saw palmetto herb extract, had a long term efficacy and acceptability as therapy for BPH. The test was conducted over a period of 24 months and it was found that the quality of life from the base line study improved dramatically. The men had decreased prostate size, better urinary flow and increased sexual activity. The saw palmetto herb works by protecting the gland from irritating testosterone levels and will promote it to shrink.

Even better news about the herb saw palmetto, is that when used to combat enlarged prostate its side effects are almost none and it is non-toxic. Some men complained of gastrointestinal disorders but these were relieved when the herb was taken with food. There were some concerns in the early stages of study that the saw palmetto herb would mask prostate cancer by lowering the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels. After much more study this was found not to be true.

Many studies show that you must buy a brand that is ’standardized with at least 85-95 percent fatty acids’ with 320 grams of the herb. In a few cases when large amounts where used it caused diarrhea in some patients. Studies have shown that the saw palmetto extract is effective in 90% of the men in clinical trials in over a four to six week period. Pharmaceutical drugs have been shown to need up to a year for significant improvement. Another benefit is that saw palmetto extracts are about one quarter of the price of pharmaceutical drugs.

prostate cancer questions and answers

There have been other herbs that have be cited as beneficial to enlarged prostate such as, stinging nettle, pumpkin seed, zinc, green tea, South African star grass and melatonin. None are as effective or show the promise of the saw palmetto herb.

In conclusion the benefits of the Saw Palmetto herb for an enlarged prostate are many. It will reduce symptoms of BPH, with occasional mild gastrointestinal distress but this is infrequent. The herbal remedy will not interfere with a prostate cancer diagnosis and it has no known drug interactions. The dosage has widely been agreed on by scientists as 320 grams per day and will cost you significantly less then a prescription drug.

If  you are looking for an herbal remedy for an enlarged prostate speak to your Doctor about taking the saw palmetto herb to relieve your symptoms. Always speak to your Doctor before adding any medicines to your regime whether they are natural herbs, vitamins or supplements.

Men’s Health Issues, Swollen Prostate

Although some people believe that prostate enlargement problems may be early prostate cancer warning signs, these two are not necessarily connected. So what causes an enlarged prostate and what are the possible cures for a male enlarged prostate?

Signs Of Problem With Prostate Enlargement

Having a swollen prostate is not life-threatening, and it is doesn’t have to be an early sign of prostate cancer needing specialist prostate cancer care. However, the condition is very painful, and can lead to failure of the bladder, kidney damage, bladder stones, urinary infections and other problems.

function of prostate gland

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), as it is commonly called, is starting to affect more and more middle aged and elderly men. The prostate gland is slightly larger than a peanut and is located snug in between the urethra and the pubic bone. As the prostate grows, the bladder has to work more in order to push urine through the newly thinned urethra. The muscles of the bladder become overworked and therefore more sensitive. This causes the person affected to have to urinate more frequently. As the prostate grows and places pressure on the already sensitive bladder, the bladder begins to lose the ability to empty itself completely.

There is not a true diagnosis for what causes benign prostatic hyperplasia. Some medical specialists have the theory that androgens, which include testosterone and hormones similar to testosterone, are the main causes of the development of an enlarged prostate. Testosterone is the most important androgen, and is also the most important chemical produced in a man’s life.

The prostate works towards converting testosterone into a powerful androgen known as Dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. DHT stimulates the growth of cells inside the tissue lining of the prostate gland. This is the theory which causes the enlarged prostate. Another theory is that blood vessels deteriorate in men as they age. The end result is an abnormal flow of blood and in return, a loss of oxygen. This also results in an enlarged prostate.

There are  preventative measures that can be taken to ensure good blood flow and function such as through diet and lifestyle managagement.

prostate help
The prostatic hyperplasia is diagnosed in three ways: a rectal exam, blood tests, and an ultrasound. A rectal exam is always tried first, but the doctor may or may not be able to tell if the prostate is inflamed. The doctor might also require a urine sample to determine if there is an infection present that has caused any urinary discomfort.

The chance of prostate cancer is also considered as one possible option and so this must be determined before an enlarged prostate can be diagnosed. In order to determine this, the doctor will order an ultrasound of the prostate and urinary tract. The blood tests are able to pick up on abnormally high levels of prostate antigens.

Having your enlarged prostate diagnosed in the early stages is vital for preventing any permanent damage. The worst case scenario is urinary retention. As mentioned earlier, if you let the problems persist, your bladder could eventually stop contracting allowing urine to flow. The choices for treatment are medicine or a surgical procedure.

The doctor will probably recommend medicine first, unless your condition is so severe that a surgical procedure is the necessary first step. If you are experiencing any of the signs mentioned for an enlarged prostate, make sure that you make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible. This is not a condition that can be put off for a later date.

Natural Treatments For Prostate Cancer

prostate cancer and nutritionGrow and use your own herbs. You’ll be healthier and it might just save your life.

From the age of around 45 years, a majority of men begin to experience changes in their urination patterns. In varying degrees, the experience can be a subtle change or can become a very distressing painful and in some cases embarrassing experience. This is the age at which the prostate gland begins to change and may swell around the urethra and constrict the flow of urine. This may mean an increase in the urge to urinate more frequently as the restriction inhibits emptying of the bladder. In extreme cases the restriction may be extreme and result in painful slow elimination. Kidney problems may follow.

Most pharmaceutical products have limited if any effect and so, more and more men are turning to herbal alternatives with some promising results. Most recent prostate studies show that herbal remedies are a more effective treatment method than drugs.

The most common herbs used successfully are;
1.Saw Palmetto,
2.Stinging Nettle,
3.Rye Pollen,
4.Pygeum, and
5.Lycopene.

Seeking The Best Prostate Cancer Treatment

There is a wide  range of prostate cancer treatments available today for both early and late stage prostate cancer and this article outlines the choices open to patients.

There is a wide range of prostate cancer treatments available today a end stage prostate cancernd the treatment that your doctor recommends will depend to a very large extent upon the progression of the disease. Thereafter it is a matter of discussing each treatment option with your doctor and of considering the advantages and disadvantages of each, as well as of course looking carefully at the risks which all prostate cancer treatments carry.

Prostrate cancer treatments fall into two broad categories – those that are recommended for early (Stage I and Stage II) cancer which is confined to the prostate gland and those used to treat advanced (Stage III and Stage IV) cancer which has spread to other areas of the body.

There are some natural alternative treatments available too.

Early stage cancer treatments are designed to remove the prostate or to destroy it and thus to stop the cancer cells before they have a chance to spread to other areas of the body.

The surgical removal of the prostate gland (prostatectomy) will normally be carried out as either traditional open surgery or using a less invasive laparoscopic approach. One recent development is the introduction of robotic surgery (using the da Vinci system) which has the advantage of preserving nerves, muscles and other structures in the area of the prostate. Robotic surgery is extremely effective but should be carried out by a highly skilled surgeon in a centre with considerable experience in using this technique.

Radiation therapy may also be used to kill the cancer cells within the prostate gland. A variety of different radiation therapy techniques may be used and treatment will normally be carried out over a period of several weeks.

A relatively new technique, which is still being evaluated, is known as cryosurgery. During cryosurgery, which is carried out under anesthesia, cooling probes are guided into the prostate using ultrasound and the cancer cells are killed by freezing them.

The final form of treatment used for early stage cancer is high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). This procedure is again carried out under anesthesia (or using a local spinal anesthetic) and a probe is placed into the prostate gland through the rectum. A beam of high intensity focused ultrasound is them used to raise the temperature in the area of focus and thus to kill the cancer cells.

prostate cancer diet , especially at the early stages can be beneficial in preventing cancer or supporting conventional treatment.

For late stage prostate cancer hormone therapy is used and this is designed not to attack the cancer itself but to target the male hormones (in particular testosterone) which the cancer cells need to grow.

Late stage treatments will include orchiectomy (the removal of the testicles), which is designed to remove the source of the body’s main production of testosterone, or a variety of hormone treatments aimed at either reducing the level of testosterone and other male hormones in the body or of blocking their action.

In cases where hormone therapy proves ineffective, systematic radiation therapy or chemotherapy may be recommended.

Whatever the stage of your cancer it is important to consider all of the options carefully and weigh the advantages, disadvantages and risks of each carefully before choosing the treatment that is best for you.

What Causes Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer affects the prostate, which is a gland in the male reproductive system. The cancer cells may then spread to various parts of the body, especially the bones and lymph nodes. Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in male.

If detected early, prostate cancer can be effectively treated .

However, advance prostate cancer is usually fatal. Hence, it is critical for men in the high risk group to be screened for prostate cancer regularly.
what is the survival rate of prostate cancer
Most men have no problems with their prostate gland before the age of forty. Many will then start to develop enlarged prostate as they age. This prostate problem is not usually serious although the symptoms are annoying and inconvenient. The prostate enlarges and squeezes the urethra which carries urine from the bladder. When the urethra is squeezed by the enlarging prostate gland, there will be constant urge to urinate. The other symptoms are inability to control the urination process, the start, the stop and a weak flow of urine.

An enlarged prostate is not necessarily a sign of prostate cancer although the warning signs of prostate cancer are similar to that of an enlarged prostate. Hence, it is prudent to test for prostate cancer when you have symptoms of an enlarged prostate.

The symptoms of prostate cancer include difficulty with urinating and ejaculation, blood in the urine or semen and pain in the lower body region.

However, you should know that you may have prostate cancer but not be experiencing any signs and symptoms. So just because you feel fine and healthy, it may not mean that you are, and so regardless of how you feel, you still need to get regular prostate check up, especially after the age of forty.

All Prostate Cancer Warning Signs Should Be Investigated Quickly

Some prostate cancer warning signs are the same as those of less serious diseases. However, all prostate cancer warning signs should be investigated promptly and thoroughly, especially for men in their fifties. These warning signs are the subtle evidence of the serious disease. Prostate cancer is a slow growing cancer with no obvious surface signs. When the tumor is sizeable, symptoms will manifest. These symptoms include frequent urges to urinate, difficulty in urinating, and a weak flow of urine when urinating.

The prostate cancer warning signs are also shown during sexual intercourse when a man has trouble with erection. Blood in the urine is another sign of prostate cancer. A stiff back, hips or thighs might be due to the growing prostate cancer. All these problems should be promptly investigated as possible indication of prostate cancer. As the cancer progresses, there will be more obvious warning signs but it may be too late by then.
